Get to know me
Life often reveals its deepest purpose through our greatest challenges. As the voice behind Courage Lighthouse, I'm a Puerto Rican father of four, blessed with a beautiful West African wife and a rich tapestry of life experiences that have shaped my understanding of mental health and resilience.
My journey with depression and anxiety began in the early 2000s, during my service as a young Army PFC. While many might assume my struggles stemmed from my tour of duty overseas, they actually emerged from events that preceded it. Life has equipped me with diverse skills – from photography and music engineering to medicine (not as a doctor) and law enforcement – yet beneath these achievements churned a sea of internal battles that many of us silently face.
I intimately know the weight of depression and anxiety: the bone-deep exhaustion, the constant worry about what's next, the questioning of every decision, the racing heart, the sleepless nights. I understand the feeling of being physically present but mentally elsewhere, the pressure that builds like a kettle about to burst, the emotional suppression that becomes second nature. I understand the indescribable pain—that deep, consuming ache that words can barely capture.
Recently, my battle reached a critical point, culminating in hospitalization following a severe emotional breakdown and suicidal thoughts. But God’s grace intervened through an unexpected phone call from a heaven-sent person who pulled me back from the edge. This experience taught me invaluable lessons about triggers, coping mechanisms, and the vital importance of professional support and community resources. Most importantly, it reinforced my faith in God and the enduring power of hope.
Beyond my mental health journey, I’m a man of many passions—a photographer who captures life’s beauty, a musician who finds solace in melodies, and a craftsman who works with both wood and technology. I believe in giving back, whether through charity work or simply offering a helping hand. My family walks a path of faith and hard work—not wealthy by worldly standards, but rich in what truly matters.
Having quit smoking cold turkey in 2010 and continuing to face daily mental health challenges, I understand both the power of determination and the profound importance of compassion. I’m here to challenge the dismissive “just get over it” mentality and create a space where your struggles are acknowledged, and your strength is celebrated.
This blog isn’t just my story—it’s an invitation to join a community of warriors fighting similar battles. Whether you’re in the depths of depression, navigating anxiety’s maze, or supporting someone who is, you’ll find understanding here. Together, we’ll explore coping strategies, share victories (both tiny and tremendous), and remind each other that even our darkest moments don’t define our entire story.
Let’s break the silence surrounding mental health, one honest conversation at a time. Because while life isn’t always rosy, we don’t have to walk through the gray alone. Your story matters, your pain is valid, and your presence here makes our community stronger.
Welcome to Courage Lighthouse—where hope shines eternal, and healing happens together.
